Update on Tiskilwa Water System:
We have made some further adjustments to the current set-up at the water plant and have made some meaningful progress toward removing the high iron we're seeing in the water. These elevated levels, which are not a health hazard, are what has contributed to the discolored water we've been experiencing.
As discussed previously there are four filters at the water plant, all of which are going to be emptied, cleaned, have their internal parts replaced, and new filter media installed in the coming weeks. We're working with a couple different vendors to get estimates and timelines for the completion of those tasks. In the meantime, filter 1 has been taken offline as it is no longer performing as expected. This reduces the output of the plant by 25%, so we're currently producing at 90 gallons/minute instead of the full plant capacity of 120 gal/minute. We shouldn't experience any shortages, but do ask that residents keep this in mind as they monitor their daily usage.
The twice daily backflushing of the remaining three filters, along with a chlorine injection between the aeration/filtration steps to further oxidize the iron, has helped us get the iron levels below the "nuisance level." This is the level when we start to see discoloration in the water. If the nuisance level is a 3.0, the plant is currently performing consistenly at a .70
The plant has been producing at this level for around a week, and we anticipate being able to maintain this until the filter maintenance can be performed.
The iron content remains elevated, but is being managed as best as we can for the time being. The water system is closely monitored on a daily basis by the village employees, an outside certified testing company and ultimately the EPA. At no point has the water system been dangerous to public health, but we acknowledge the discoloration and related issues that accompany the elevated iron, and are working as fast as we can to lower it.
When a contract for the maintenance work has been awarded and a start date established, the public will be notified of the anticipated timeline for completion.
Thank you for your continued patience.
